First Annual Family Camp.

Camp Hickory Hill was proud to host our first Family Camp on September 11, 12, and 13th. We hosted five families, and had some familiar faces out to camp along with some new ones. The family camp allowed some of our veteran campers to show their parents around those hills of Hickory, as well as introduce new parents to camp.

Thanks to the help of staff members Eric Ladd, Sydney Lock, Kelsey Payne, Kyle Rood, Derek Marlowe, and Rowena LaFavor, the weekend was a great success. Campers and parents alike had a chance to sit in on lectures presented by Danita Rife, Dr. Gardner, and Jennifer Polniak during the morning, and then had a blast on our challenge course and rappelling wall in the afternoon.

It was great to have Bibbles Thomas out with big brother, and Ms. Ashlan with her constant Kool-aid mustache. Thanks very much to all of our campers and parents, and we hope to see you back during our summer camp in June!

Plans are in the works for CHH to run more family camps in the future, be watching our website and blog for more info!

Everyone had a blast!

Unfortunetly it had rained here at camp so to make up for the cancled activities the cabins made pirate flags arrgg! Then they played the exciting game of MAFIA until dinner.

To go with our pirate theme for the all camp activity we watched the action-packed and hilarious movie of Pirates of the Carribean! A perfect end for a stormy day.

Session 1: Day 2 of Awesome!

DAY TWO

With day two upon us the campers begin their day with a fabulous breakfast and LOUD singing of old camp songs. That lead into signing up for activities for 4th activity period and a very educational class about diabetes and complications.

Today's activities began with an all camp softball game! Team 1 vs Team Awesomeness. Quite the battle today with Team 1 in the lead for the first 3 innings and then Team Awesomeness taking the lead getting three more runs but Team 1 dominated in the last inning scoring 3 more runs making the final score 6-5.

After morning snack we had an all camp swim test where each camper would swim from the shallow end to the deep end and then tread water for a few minutes. Each camper passed their tests and rejoiced with an all camp swim, then headed down for blood checks, shots and lunch.

After lunch we were lucky enough to have the S.W.A.T. Team from the Columbia Police department come out and give us a demonstration of how the weaponry they use works. Then letting everyone, who had a signed waver, shoot the guns.

After an adrinalin rush from shooting, campers go get their snack and head to 4th activity which was either a game of volleyball or doing the flying squirrel! Then having dinner and ending with a fierce scavenger hunt where Cabin 3 won by just a hair.

Session 1: FIRST DAY!!!!

FIRST DAY

"Camp Hickory Hill is the place to be" as the first camper arrives and has a touching reunion with one of her old friends from years past. After chatting it up with old counslors, the campers go through the various steps of the check-in process. In the Arts and Crafts building the camper starts by talking to our camp director; making sure all of the paper work is in order, signing extra forms, taking keys if a camper drove themself. Then they move on down the line where they recieve their lock and lock combination for the BLOOD SHED.

Then they stop to talk to the medical director about their insulin regeamen and/or other medication. Once the campers have finished the check-in they head down to the NEEDLE SHACK for head lice and foot inspection and just an all around check up. Then they go bring their stuff to their cabin and mingle with fellow campers.

For new and old campers to get to know one another they go up to the challenge course for team building exercises until blood check for dinner. They play name games and must swing across a boiling pit of lava that is 8 billion degrees and land safely on the other side.
Then the day winds down with blood checks, shots, then a wonderful meal of turkey, mashpotatos, green beans and whole wheat rolls. Soon to be hyped up again by a rousing game of dodge ball with teams 1 and 4 being our top players!

Soon returning for a nighttime snack then having our voices echoing through the woods with our spirited singing of our most cherished camp songs at campfire. Throats sore and cheeks ear to ear, campers and staff wind down with bed time shots, showers and an inviting bed to rest up for the week ahead.

Camp Hickory Hill 2009

Dear campers, staff members, alums, and friends of camp hickory hill,

I hope you all had a wonderful new year and are looking forward to 2009 as much as we are here at CHH! There have been a lot of developments at camp, I’m sure many of you have noticed that we are opening up a third week of camp this year in June. We are very excited about extending the duration of camp and are excited about our new age group breakups. We are also working on getting the dam at the lake fixed, so if everything works out like we hope it will, the lake will be in much better shape come June!

That being said, we will still offer a top notch diabetic education, with an emphasis on self care, and an amazing range of activities that includes our zip line, flying squirrel, rappelling, and rock climbing. Not to mention our great evening activities such as the always popular shaving cream fight and mud pit.

So we are very much looking forward to 2009, but we do need your help!!! As everyone knows, the current economic recession is impacting all businesses, and this extends to not-for-profits as well. But we all can do a small part to pitch in and help out at camp. What does this mean for you? Staff members, we need as many great counselors as we can get this year. Tell your friends! Campers, get those applications in, and tell your friends with diabetes to join you at camp this year! With the added week, we want to bring in as many new campers as possible. Friends and Alums, please continue to check this site for volunteer opportunities, or call with your thoughts on avenues we might pursue.
